General Admission Requirements

Admission to TCI requires one of the following:
  • a high school diploma from a United States secondary school or an equivalent credential from a foreign educational system;
  • a General Education Development (GED) diploma; or
  • the achievement of passing scores on a federally approved entrance examination that demonstrates that a non-graduate/non-GED holder can benefit from the education being offered.

Requirements

Academic Records

If you have a U.S. high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) Diploma the College will attempt to obtain official transcripts for you as part of the admission process.

If you were educated outside of the United States, you must provide copies of official academic records in the original language. The College will request certified, literal English translations if they are needed. Refer to the list of foreign educational credential considered for admission provided on this site for more specific information. Please note that only the most frequently seen documents that are acceptable are noted and that many credentials not listed can result in admission eligibility.

If you have previous college or university study and are requesting transfer credit, you will need to provide a copy of transcripts from all institutions attended.

TCI will obtain official college transcripts if the prior education was completed in the United States and there are no holds on your academic record at the prior institution(s). You must complete a “Transcript Release Authorization Form” in the Office of Credential Verification and Assessment to enable us to request and pay for transcripts on your behalf.

Testing Required for Admission and Course Placement

TCI uses the Accuplacer Computerized Placement Assessment, the Career Programs Assessment (CPAt), and the Combined English Language Skills Assessment (CELSA) as part of the admission and placement process.

High school graduates, GED holders, and college transfers:
Electronics Engineering Technology applicants must take the Accuplacer Assessment and achieve specific minimum scores to be admitted.

All other programs operate on an open admission plan. Admission is based on the fact that you have a high school diploma or obtained a GED. In these programs, the Accuplacer Assessment is required for placement only, but must be completed before you can register for classes.

Other Options
If you have taken the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT I) within the past five years you can submit those scores in lieu of taking the Accuplacer Assessment.
If you don’t have your official score report but know that you took the SAT, contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and have an official score report sent to TCI.

If your native or first language is not English and you’re applying from outside of the New York Metropolitan Area, you can submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A score of 550 or above (213 computer-based) will typically exempt you from taking classes in English as a Second Language (ESL). All non-native speakers will have their language skills re-evaluated upon arrival on campus.

Applicants who do not have a high school diploma or GED:

  • Admission to all programs requires the achievement of specific scores on a federally-approved test administered at TCI. Achieving these scores demonstrates your ability to benefit from the education being offered. It also relates to you eligibility to receive financial assistance to help pay for college-related expenses.
  • The Career Programs Assessment (CPAt) will be administered to all applicants with native or near native English speaking capability.
  • The Combined English Language Skills Assessment (CELSA) will be given to applicants with lower levels of non-native English speaking capability.
  • The Office of Credential Verification and Assessment will determine which assessment you will take.

Immunization Requirements

Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
New York State Public Health Law requires that all students born on or after January 1, 1957 be immunized against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR). You can satisfy this requirement in one of three ways:
  • Provide immunization records showing that you have received two measles and rubella vaccinations, and one mumps vaccination.
  • Submit the results of a blood test from a physician showing full immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella
  • Obtain the vaccinations at TCI when you register for classes.
A fee of $30 will charged to your student account for this service.

Meningococcal Meningitis
New York Status Public Health Law requires all colleges and universities to distribute information about meningococcal meningitis to students enrolled for at least six semester hours/credits of study, and maintain a record of whether the student has, will, or chooses to receive a vaccination.

Questions on New York State Public Health requirements should be directed to the Office of Credential Verification and Assessment.

Advanced Standing Credit

There are a number of ways getting college credit for what you may already know.

Advanced Placement (AP)
Many students take Advanced Placement courses in high school.

TCI will award credit for AP examination scores of 3 and above, as long as the exam passed is in a subject area required in you program of study and the exam was taken within the last five years.

Applicants must have an official score report sent directly to TCI’s Office of Credential Verification and Assessment.

Visit the College Board Website for information on how to obtain score reports.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

CLEP provides students of any age the opportunity to demonstrate college-level achievement though a program of examinations in undergraduate college courses.

TCI awards credit for CLEP scores of approximately 50 or above, as long as the content is comparable to a course required in your program of study. Contact the Office of Credential Verification and Assessment for more specific information.
Details on the CLEP program can be found on the College Board.

Industry Certifications
Students who hold various technology industry certifications (such as CompTIA A+, MCSE, MOUS, and NET+) may be eligible for exemption from taking courses in specific programs of study. Applicants should contact the dean or department chairperson in their major program of study for specific information.

TCI Credit by Examination
Sometimes, people gain knowledge of a particular subject without formal classroom study, whether on the job, or on their own. For these individuals, TCI provides an opportunity to “test out” of select introductory courses in some of our programs. Prospective students interested in exploring this option should contact the Office of Credential Verification and Assessment for further information. A fee of $35 is assessed for each examination attempted, whether or not it results in credit or exemption.
